Religious institutions might well consider the cultivation of virtue as a measure of their success. Author Karen Armstrong, who wrote the excellent book
A History of God, critiqued the failures of some modern religious institutions in an interview published in
Time magazine. She said, "Only Western Christianity makes a song and dance about creeds and beliefs. The authentic test of a religion is not what you believe. It's what you do, and unless your religion expresses itself in compassion for all living things, it is not authentic."
