I believe in learning from every situation, and so I can see that in your example. What did I learn from having my purse stolen, rather than getting pissed. However, I think that reactions are important, too. I think that moderating is the key....for me, at least. I need to work on NOT getting upset at trivial things, and also on actually reacting to the big things. I have a tendency to get pissed off at some small thing that doesn't matter, but when something big happens, I go numb.

Part of that is my fuse length....it's long, but keeps burning, so I'll get upset at something small because I'm burning over the last week's worth of stuff. So, letting go is something to work on, too!

Also, I tend to process big things slowly. Maybe I kind of do that Wu Wei with the big things. I don't react quickly, but instead let life flow till I figure out what I am supposed to do.

I always smile when I think of this topic. I learned about this in a philosophy class and my professor was a real goofball. He always said it like "whooooooowheeeeeeeeeee!" and sounded like the guy from My Name is Earl

I'm glad this got bumped up. I missed it before.

At first reading I was thinking, no....I believe in being proactive, but as I continued reading and the comparison with the water and Tarot's post too.....OMG this is such a different thing than my first impression.

I think it's wonderful (although difficult) to be strong and influential, making your own path, while still going with the flow and remaining subtle and not going against the grain.

It's sort of like speak softly and carry a big stick? Not exactly, but sort of.

Thank you because this concept is somthing I really want to internalize and think about. I think it is a very healthy way to be for your soul and the world around you.

The first time I was introduced to this concept the example used was Gahndi. The correlation might help those who are struggling with the idea of inaction. Its not that we are supposed to do nothing, but that we're supposed to do the right thing peacefully. If you think about Gahndi and all the change he helped bring about - it was all pretty much brought about by him doing nothing. He simply wouldn't fight when they wanted him to, he wouldn't change his mind and take up an idea that was wrong. He changed the course of history by being.

I think we can apply this to the father who rescued his daughter. He didn't kill the guy who snatched her, or create a riot over it, he followed and rescued - there were more dramatic paths he could have chosen, but instead he chose the right option in a peaceful manner.
