Palin...

I saw this and a few articles on the events surrounding the birth of her last child and wondered if you would have done as she did under the circumstances. If I were in labor with a special-needs child who very possibly might need assistance to survive at birth, I wouldn't have made a speech and flown knowing I was leaking and could become infected or deliver at any time...what do you think?

Palins' child diagnosed with Down syndrome: Top Stories | adn.com

EARLY ARRIVAL

Palin was in Texas last week for an energy conference of the National Governors Association when she experienced signs of early labor. She wasn't due for another month.

Early Thursday -- she thinks it was around 4 a.m. Texas time -- she consulted with her doctor, family physician Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, who is based in the Valley and has delivered lots of babies, including Piper, Palin's 7-year-old.

Palin said she felt fine but had leaked amniotic fluid and also felt some contractions that seemed different from the false labor she had been having for months.

"I said I am going to stay for the day. I have a speech I was determined to give," Palin said. She gave the luncheon keynote address for the energy conference.

Palin kept in close contact with Baldwin-Johnson. The contractions slowed to one or two an hour, "which is not active labor," the doctor said.

"Things were already settling down when she talked to me," Baldwin-Johnson said. Palin did not ask for a medical OK to fly, the doctor said.

"I don't think it was unreasonable for her to continue to travel back," Baldwin-Johnson said.

So the Palins flew on Alaska Airlines from Dallas to Anchorage, stopping in Seattle and checking with the doctor along the way.

"I am not a glutton for pain and punishment. I would have never wanted to travel had I been fully engaged in labor," Palin said. After four kids, the governor said, she knew what labor felt like, and she wasn't in labor.

Still, a Sacramento, Calif., obstetrician who is active in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said when a pregnant woman's water breaks, she should go right to the hospital because of the risk of infection. That's true even if the amniotic fluid simply leaks out, said Dr. Laurie Gregg.

"To us, leaking and broken, we are talking the same thing. We are talking doctor-speak," Gregg said.

Some airlines have policies against pregnant women onboard during the last four weeks of pregnancy, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises against flying after 36 weeks.

This was going to be Palin's last flight anyway, her doctor said.

Alaska Airlines has no such rule and leaves the decision to the woman and her doctor, said spokeswoman Caroline Boren. Palin was very pleasant to the gate agents and flight attendants, as always, Boren said.

"The stage of her pregnancy was not apparent by observation. She did not show any signs of distress," Boren said.

Palin never got big with this pregnancy. She said she didn't try to hide it but didn't feel a need to alert the airline, either.

They landed in Anchorage around 10:30 p.m. Thursday and an hour later were at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Wasilla.

Baldwin-Johnson said she had to induce labor, and the baby didn't come until 6:30 a.m. Friday.

"It was smooth. It was relatively easy," Palin said. "In fact it was the easiest of all," probably because Trig was small, at 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

No, I would not have.

Nor would I go on the campaign trail when I have a four month old special needs and medically fragile infant.

But that's just me.

It is so hard to say no I wouldn't do it or yes maybe I would considering I really have never been in that position. I was put on bedrest with the twins and I could not stand to be in bed and I did tons of stuff I should not have done. I felt that nothing would happen to me and many of you with twins or have known someone preggo with twins knows how much can go wrong. I just didn't think it would becasue that stuff dosen't happen to you it happens to others. Thinking back yes I was an idiot so much could of happend and I was lucky. Because of her job she probably felt like she has to go and that she was strong enough to go. I really don't understand what her labor has to do with anything anyway. I mean is she being blamed for her son having a down syndrom baby becasue she flew. Does this make her less of a mother because she was doing her job?

I see your point TB and I don't even necessarily disagree.

I haven't seen anyone say (yet) that she caused her son's down syndrome by flying. I'm sure some might try and say that.

I was remarking on the fact that she flew around from place to place while knowingly leaking amniotic fluid (which is a risk to her and the baby).

What Circle said..not that she caused his issues of course.

A baby who is born with Down's may need immediate assistance at birth to survive or thrive, and I think the point wasn't whether she was less of a mother for doing her job, but that maybe her judgement in flying for any period of time, much less for hours, without even telling the crew she was in labor, especially with a baby who might need help upon arrival, wasn't the best.

I totally agree with getting your job done, but I think the point many are trying to make is not political, but simply that she seemed to feel the speech and the trip were pretty important considering her child's welfare and her own health, not to mention the staff's ability to prepare for an emergency birth, were at stake, and that it seemed unusual for a mom to feel that way.

That is why I asked...I wondered what anyone else would do. I was on bedrest most of my pg with my girls and I knew they were high risk and followed instructions and listened to my body, and I would never have gotten on an airplane in those circumstances or gone on to give a speech if I were leaking and I knew my baby would most likely need assistance at birth. They said the doctor said it was okay, but I don't know how that went down actually, and I think she and the baby were very lucky things went well.

Anyway, I am not saying she is bad or a lousy mother or anything, but just asking what you guys would have done NOT knowing the baby wasn't going to come at any time and leaking fluid. In hindsight it worked out and I am really glad, but wondered what anyone else thinks she might have chosen under those circumstances.

I can't say for sure whether I would or wouldn't have done the exact same thing in her postition, but I can say that I think I would have... When I was pregnant with Noah I worked literally right up to the hour I was induced, and then was back keeping tabs on things the next day after 21 hours of labor, 1.5 hours of pushing and then an emergency c-section. Should I have, no, but I was working towards a promotion and I knew the projects I had in process were critical to that promotion. Knowing she was in the running for VP candidate probably colored her decisions in the same way.

I'm not saying it's right - in fact, I know its not - but - it has taken me 9 months away from that environment to be able to say it, and I'm not sure I'm 100% to the healthy place yet where if I were to go back tomorrow I would be able to maintain my new perspective long term.

If the Dr said she was okay to fly, I think that means something. And it was her 4th pregnancy, meaning she probably has a good read on how her body reacts to labor. Add that to all the women I know who thought they were leaking on more than one occasion just to find out it was pee...

In the end - I don't like it, but I do understand it and have been closer than I like to admit.

Palin. I still can't believe that McCain picked her!!! Much less that she accepted!?!?!?! A four month old baby - unbelievable!

In a way - I'm glad. Because there is no way he'll get elected now.

I, personally, would not have travelled during any stage of labor. I really didn't even feel like going to the birth center, but I wanted my midwife with me and she doesn't do house calls. (unfortunately) But then I'm not in Palin's position. I don't have anyone scrutinizing my every move. I just wonder if her position in government made her feel like she had to "be a man" about it and go through with her plans. If she would have done like a lot of women with her resources and taken off the last month of her pregnancy or even a realistic maternity leave, she would have been scrutinized for spending too much time having babies and too little time doing her duty as governor.

I agree with Scarlet on this one. I also suspect, and hope I'm wrong, that if Palin was a Dem we'd find a way to defend this choice. I don't agree with Palin's politics but I certainly think HRC put politics above her families' best interest for years and we're not bashing her for it. In fact, if the Dems had picked a woman with the same kind of experience as Palin I suspect there'd be lots of defending of the choice and excitement for the ticket. Why is it different because she's an arch conservative most of us don't personally agree with?

People...for even the most paltry of reasons, we should be proud that a woman has finally been nominated for this office. We don't have to vote for her or agree, but geez. Can't we be sort of admiring of what she's accomplished even as we dislike her politics?
