We know, we're extremely cautious and we just need it for now, for emergencies. I kinda spent to much in the last couple months and now we're pretty low so it was his idea which I was kinda surprised about.
We don't have any either. Which can have it's good and bad points.
My opinion. Treat it like cash. Don't ever put more than you can afford to pay, on it. It's a good way to establish credit if it's used properly, which unfortunately, not every one does.
According to our accountant, who is pushing for us to get one, he suggests you use it at least once a month, start off small. Groceries, diapers, etc. When the bill comes in, pay the majority of the bill, leaving a small balance. This is what help you establish credit. Oh and ALWAYS make sure you pay it on time.
One card suggested to us was Capital One, or go to your bank and see if they issue credit cards, most banks do.
I hope this has help and please, please be very careful with CC. They could be a death trap if not used right.
They are basically crooks right now who can change rates, lower limits, and screw up you credit and finances omn a moment's whim. We won't have any until they are regulated like any other lending company would be. I don't think from experience and research there are any good ones now since they seem to be above the law.

I discovered I like sunlight and warmth much more than peeling old doors anyway, so I climbed out the window and reveled in my discovery. I will never sit behind a closed door again, no matter how comfortable my chair becomes. Me
Mel, I'm glad you found your own open window and stepped through it.

NO NO NO Crapital One! (Sorry FB) They are horrible about CS, late posting of your payments to cause you to go over limit or get late fees and customer service is non-existant.
Try creditboards.com They have a HUGE wealth of knowledge over there and with just a little reading, can guide you in the best direction.
And Tarty is right - your local CU or the bank you currently have is one of the best places to start.

Please know that even if I don't post it, each and every one of you are in my thoughts in good times and in bad.
In addition to your local credit union or bank, American Express has a nice starter card - I think it's just called "Blue." They do annual reviews of your history and interest, they also have a no annual fee option if you are clear that you have no interest in earning reward points. (it does still let you earn a % back though).
My biggest warning would be not to go with Chase - they're very finicky about your credit, due dates, and the pattern in which you pay. My mom one time paid her card 1/2 off with part of her tax return and the next month her interest was 50% higher. When she called to ask about it, it was because the lower balance put her in a different client grouping. In that grouping she was considered high risk, but in the group with the higher balances she was lower risk for that group.

I hate credit cards & don't have one, but at one point I had like a shit load. And then I couldn't afford to pay for them all & well, you know how that goes.
For emergencies I use my savings account, but I do understand the concept of having a credit card just for emergencies. (my problem is that every little thing WAS an emergency )
