Palmistry is a method of interpreting the shape of the hand and the lines of the palm, to project the character and possible life experiences of an individual. The science is divided into two broad areas: the study of hand structure, or cheirology, and the study of the lines of the palm, or cheiromancy.

The modern theory is that the lines of the hand represent a graphic shorthand of the circuits of the brain. The nerve group that controls the hands is exactly in the centre of the brain, and all the electrical energies of our thinking pass through it. Palmists feel that the lines on the hand are formed in some relation to thought patterns, nerve linkages, or even chromosomal structures.

Before attempting to read your lines, there's a host of other factors to be considered, starting with the size, strength, color, flexibility and temperature of your hands.

Before determining the size of the hand, it is important to judge the size in relation to the rest of the body. Generally small hands represent the inclination towards large ideas, and large hands show a desire to do things and get them done one your own. Those with small and smooth hands tend to be the best executives because they have the ability to think big and delegate work. Those with large, knotty hands tend to have a strong desire carry out their own wishes and ideas on their own.

Determining the strength of your hands comes next.

This is best determined by shaking someone's hand. If the handshake is firm, then the person would most likely be aggressive and outgoing. However, if they present a weak handshake, then the obvious qualities would tend to be a little reserved, they may also be the type of person who likes to be taken care of.

The color of the palm is a good indicator of the vitality and strength of a person. A pale palm often shows a lack of strength and vitality. The Pointed Hand

This hand is characteristic of its delicacy and grace. It has an almond shape where it is wider and round at the base and narrower as you move up towards pointed fingers. The thumb may also be long and flexible. The hand is often pale in colour, and the lines are often shallow.

The Square Hand

This hand is smooth and firm. The palm is usually as wide as it is long, and it has a fairly square base. The fingers also have a square nature, and they can be short or long, and smooth and knotted. There tends to be few lines, however deep and clear.

• Typical occupations include, successful business men who often use their hands.

The Coned-Shaped Hand

This hand is characteristic of its tubular fingers and smooth round base. It is broader at the base and tends to be fairly flat as well. Tapers a bit. Wavy lines.

• A philosopher, inventive and creative, interested in theory as well.
• Typical occupations include, educators, lawyer and artists.

The Spade-Shaped Hand

This hand is characteristic of its square base. The base is also narrower than the top of the palm. Displays knotty fingers, as well as fairly broad and square.

The Mixed Hand

It is important to note that fingers should be examined and judged in relation to the entire hand as well as in relation to themselves.

The Length of Your Fingers

The length of your fingers are relative to the size of your palm. On average, the longest finger is about seven-eighths the size of your palm, and if it is just as long as your palm, then your fingers are considered long. Short fingers are shorter than seven-eighths of the palm. In relation to the fingers, the thumb is normally higher than the bottom joining of the index finger. The index finger however reaches a third of the way up the nail of the middle finger. The ring finger normally reaches just above the nail of the middle finger and the little finger should reach the top joint of the ring finger.

The length and size of a person's fingers can classify them as being intellectual, emotional or even a more physical person. Heavy fingers show a more physical nature. Long and slim signifies more of an emotional and aggressive type of person. Short and thick shows that the person is very emotionally comfortable.

If your index finger is longer than the normal length, you tend to be a leader and tell others what to do. If it is shorter however, then you tend to sit back and let others control you.

If your ring finger is longer than the normal height, you may tend to have an artistic talent, as well as a reckless and wild nature.

If your little finger is shorter than the normal length, it shows that you lack the ability to influence others. If it is longer, then you tend to be very articulate, and good at writing and selling.

The Spaces Between Your Fingers

The Ideal Thumb

The most ideal thumb is one that is a good length and stretches up to around the middle of the first joint of the index finger. It should be nice and firm, but at the same time moderately flexible (when the hand is spread, the thumb should easily stand a fair distance from the rest of the fingers). In terms of the shape, the thumb should have a well rounded upper section which tapers and slims down in the middle. This type of thumb represents someone who has a balanced will, a logical mind, and love.

• The angle made between the thumb and the index finger is known as the "angle of generosity." The farther you can bend back the thumb, the more generous the person is. A stiff thumb that sticks to the side of the palm shows great cautiousness and conservative nature with money.
  
  
• If the thumb naturally hides within the palm, then the person is usually fearful and full of anxiety.
  
  
• The farther back the top portion of the thumb can be bent back, the more easy going the person is. If it is fairly rigid, than the person is of a stiff nature.
  
  
• The mobility of the thumb represents the person's willingness to adapt to change, without being too much of a pushover.
  

The Segments of the Thumb

The thumb is divided into three sections. The top section represents the will; the middle section deals with the logic; the bottom section deals with love.

• If the top section is thin and flat, it usually shows a weak will and an unwillingness to take on responsibility. As the top section increases in firmness and fullness, the person's will increases, their nature also moves from aggressiveness to almost self-centeredness.
  
  
• If the top section is very firm and almost overdeveloped, then the person can tend to be egotistical and materialistic.
  
  
• When the middle section is full and heavy, it represents a slight forcefulness towards others. When this section is very thin, then the person tends to be quite picky and even delicate in some situations. A slightly slim mid section represents a reasonably logical mind.
  
  
• If the bottom section is overdeveloped when compared to the size of the rest of the thumb, then the person tends to allow their emotions to rule ahead of logic. If however it is proportionally more thin and flat, then the person tends to lack the ability to coordinate determination with their mental goals.

The Proportion and Size of the Thumb

The proportion of the different sections of the thumb in relation to each other is also very important. The actual size and length of the entire thumb is important as well.

• A weak will is represented by someone whose upper joint is small when compared to the bottom section.
  
  
• The person's will dominates their intellect if the top section is longer than the middle section.
  
  
• If the middle section is long compared to the top section, then the person tends to have large ideas, but does have the discipline to carry them out.
  
  
• If the length of a person's thumb reaches up to the middle joint of the index finger, then they are strong minded and strong willed. If it barely makes it to the first joint, then the person shows poor mental development.

and finally... the lines:

The Life Line

The Life Line represents your vitality and the length of your life. This is the most important line on your hand and will always be present. The Life Line is the easiest to recognize and helps to determine where your other lines are. Generally if the line swoops down to about an inch above the base of the palm, then it shows a life expectancy of about 70 years for women, and 60-65 for men.

Many experts think that the length of the life line has nothing do to with determinging age, but how well a person takes advantage of what life has to offer, meaning a short line can also belong to a wicked old person with a rather unexciting life***

This line begins on the edge of the palm, between the index finger and the thumb. It extends across the middle of the palm and wraps around the base of the thumb.

Special markings on this line indicate specific events which occurred in your life. The line can be divided into three parts to help judge when certain events occurred or might occur: (1) represents youth, (2) represents adult, (3) represents old age.




If the Life Line is long and deep, then this represents a long life full of vitality and health. A short line, if strong and deep, also shows great vitality in your life and the ability to overcome health problems. However, if the line is short and shallow, then your life may have the tendency to be controlled by others.



Extra lines are often noted as vitality lines. If your Life Line is doubled, or even tripled, then this shows a great vitality in your life, and positive forces around you.



A swooping semicircular line around the base of the thumb shows great strength and enthusiasm, as well as an improved love life.



If the line is straight and sticks close to the side of your palm, then this is a sign of a limited exploration of love and a very cautious nature.



This type of line extends to the middle of the palm, away from the thumb towards the base of the hand. This represents a life that consists of a lot of travelling.



A chained line indicates various health problems, both physical and emotional. Many people with allergies have such a line as well.



A donut indicates hospitalization as a result of some sort of accident.



A break represents a sudden change in life style, an accident or an illness.

The Head Line

Being the second most important line, the Head Line deals with your beliefs, your philosophy, your attitude on and how you approach life. It is a representation of your mentality and intelligence. Because it is so important, the Head Line must be present on the palm.

The Head Line begins just above the life line, on the side of the palm between the thumb and the index finger, and spans horizontally across the palm.

Special markings on this line indicate specific events which occurred in your life. The line can be divided into three parts to help judge when certain events occurred or might occur: (1) represents youth, (2) represents adult, (3) represents old age.



If your Head Line and Life Line are joined at the beginning, this indicates that your strong sense of mind generally rules over your body. You also look at childhood with a cautious and fearful outlook. Separated lines show a love for adventure and an enthusiasm for life.



A deep long line stretching across the palm indicates a logical and direct way of thinking. The straighter the line, the more realistic the thinking, and the deeper the line, the better the memory. If the line is short however, it tends to indicate limited mental aims, and the shift towards "physical" thinking rather than reflection.



If the line is wavy then you tend to have a short attention span, with a lack of deep thinking, however, this does not affect your intellect.



If the line is short and curved upwards, then you tend to have a short attention span, also known as a scatterbrain. A long line that curves upward represents more of a retentive memory. However if the line swoops down towards the heel, the person tends to be imaginative and creative.



Double lines show strong mental abilities.



A donut or a cross through the Head Line represents a mental crisis.



A broken line shows a distinct change in your way of thinking, sometimes even characteristic of a nervous breakdown.



A star on your line represents a significant mental achievement.



Crosses through the line indicate major decisions in your life.



The space created between the Life Line and the Head Line is known as the Angle of Luck. The greater the space, the greater your luck. The smaller the space, the less luck seems to stand by your side.

The Heart Line

The Heart Line deals with all the emotions and events that are centered around love, whether it be your ability to love, or be loved. In general, the stronger and deeper the line, the stronger and warmer your devotions.

The Heart Line is the horizontal line above the Head Line. It begins beneath either the index finger or middle finger and extends across to the edge of the palm on the side of the little finger.


Special markings on this line indicate specific events which occurred in your life. The line can be divided into three parts to help judge when certain events occurred or might occur: (1) represents youth, (2) represents adult, (3) represents old age.



A normal and content love life is represented by the line that starts beneath the index finger.



A selfish and materialistic look at love is characteristic to those whose Heart Line start below the middle finger. A slight disregard to the true meaning of love and its responsibilities are indicated by the line that starts between the middle and index finger. The person tends to easily give their heart away.




If the line extends boldly across the entire palm, then the person tends to look for those whose status rises above their own, and has great respect for them. If such a line is very straight and parallel to the Head Line, then it shows strong emotional control.



If the line is long and curved (especially upwards), then the person has a pleasant, romantic nature, great warmth in their actions. They may also tend to give all of themselves to love, no matter the costs.



A short line shows a lack of interest in the affairs of love and affections. However if the short line is also very strong and deep, then the person's affections tend to be quite stable.



A wavy line, as well as a broken or chained line, represents many love interests, but none of them very serious.



A star on the line represents happiness in your marriage.



A donut on the line represents a time of depression.



Emotional loss may be symbolized by a broken line, as well as a line with small lines crossing through it. Such losses include deaths and the end of relationships.

If the line is strong and undisturbed, then you tend to have a strong business sense as well as the strength to work hard to make money.



Wavy lines show potential health problems as a result of anxiety and nervousness.



A broken line, tends to show that poor health will create problems in your business situations.



If the line is crossed, then you tend to be prone to accidents.




If there is an extra line that branches out onto the life line, then there may be some sort of life-threatening situation in your old age.




If a square appears on the line, it is a sign of protection, whether it be in the form of good medical treatment, or aid in solving a business problem.



A donut on the line indicates a potential need for hospitalization.



Because they are closely related, the triangle formed by the Life, Head and Health Lines are considered very important. This is known as The Lucky Triangle, where the broader the area of the triangle, the greater your luck.
