![]() I found the "opposite of invulnerability of youth" piece to be especially interesting. There are definitely dueling ideas here- the one that teens think they're invincible and the one that they think they'll die young.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | We've been discussing this in gender class this week and talking about how in the media, people go out with a bang, people always make a big to do about young and beautiful people who die vs. people who live a long life, etc.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | This sounds right. Many of my students engage in very harmful behaviors and have a nihilistic outlook, while at the same time employing the age-old belief that they are immortal (and know it all, to boot! )Unfortunately, their world is very dangerous. Kids are engaging in sexual behavior at younger and younger ages, drugs, cutting (SO common!!!), gang activities, etc. They are not innocent. Sometimes, I see very young children who look so tough already and wonder if they ever were. The only solution I can see is to continue to be hopeful and to provide a good example not only for your children, but any that you encounter. You never know what will make a difference to a person. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I´m not surprised by this at all ![]() I think it´s quite a natural result of living in a world in a state of decay and with threats of a new world war, environmental crisis and over-the-top consumerism which gives them no aim. I think many people of modern culture use the "carpe diem" philosophy as a kind of drug, to make them forget about the worries of the world... ![]() The world has always been full of threats, in the past centuries, but there was family, there was God, there was the strong bond of a community. Most of these values are gone. |
