I have a horrible time with clenching my teeth when I'm asleep and when I'm not actively thinging about not doing it. Is there some way to stop this? It's really making my face and jaws hurt.
You could wear a mouth guard at night. They sell them in the sports department pretty cheap. My aunt ground hers a lot and it flared her TMJ - its what her Dr recommended.

try and relax- reduce your anxiety level; look into yogic breathing techniques. you can also buy a mouth guard very cheaply at a sporting goods store. you boil it and put it in your mouth so it molds to your teeth. wear it at night. it helps a bunch.
I do it and I have made myself get in the habit of hanging my jaw loose all the time. WHenever I feel myself clenching I open my jaw and relax it (mouth closed). If you can get a mouthguard it will help at night, and practicing relaxing it will help during the day too.

As the saying goes, when a door slams shut in one place a window opens somewhere else. After staring at the door for many years, it finally occured to me to go look for the open window. I discovered I like sunlight and warmth much more than peeling old doors anyway, so I climbed out the window and reveled in my discovery. I will never sit behind a closed door again, no matter how comfortable my chair becomes. Me
Mel, I'm glad you found your own open window and stepped through it.
My medical insurace paid for my dentist to make a mouth guard for me. It helps. There's also excerise you can do to losen it up.
i've had splints and mouthgaurds made, too. they were very expensive but my insurance covered the first ones after i met my deductible. they are also a medical expense and can be taken off your yearly taxes.
the $1 ones work fine if you don't have insurance.

Yes, in b/w accidently breaking one I used a $1. They also have the $20 ones at Walmart, although I've never tried it.
If I'm clenching really bad I always put Ben Gay on jaw/neck muscles.
